... In 1987 two great friends, Robert and Fernando, visited a famous little eatery called Chickenland, in Rosettenville, a humble suburb south of Joburg. It was there that their lives and the lives of millions changed forever. Until this time peri-peri flame-grilled chicken was the best kept secret among the Portuguese community who had come to Johannesburg from Mocambique (see History). After tasting the unique Portuguese flame-grilled peri-peri chicken, the friends knew that all South Africans had to experience it. The friends had a calling to spread the flames. They knew that South Africans were hungry for life and that they had an appetite for adventure. Getting them
to try something new would not be difficult. They made the owner of Chickenland an offer he couldnt refuse, left their office jobs and in one fowl swoop the partners and friends, started the first fire of Nandos (short for Fernandos). They set out immediately to introduce their beloved peri-peri chicken to all of South Africa. As the peoples love of Nandos chicken grew, so too did the flames of the Nandos brand as they spread to all corners of South Africa. Today, there are over 180 restaurants around our vibrant country all serving Nandos peri-peri flame-grilled chicken with their own individual passion. Although Nandos has a strong Portuguese and Mocambiquan heritage, of which we are enormously proud, we are truly South African. No matter how far Nandos travels around the globe we will never forget our humble beginnings in that little eatery called Chickenland....
